The Terrier Group

The Terrier Group, as categorized by the  Canadian Kennel Club  consists of breeds known for their spirited and tenacious character. These dogs are characterized by their energetic nature and a strong sense of loyalty to their families. Terriers were originally bred for various roles, including hunting and vermin control, which has imparted them with a bold and adventurous spirit.

Members of this group exhibit a variety of temperaments, but common traits include intelligence, determination, and a playful disposition. Their alertness makes them excellent companions and watchdogs, often forming strong bonds with their owners. Many terriers possess a courageous demeanour, sometimes leading them to challenge larger animals if provoked.

Training can be a rewarding experience with these breeds, as they are generally quick learners, though their independent streak may require consistent and positive reinforcement methods. Socialization from an early age is beneficial, helping to foster well-rounded behaviours.

The Terrier Group's diversity means that each breed also brings unique characteristics. From the feisty personality of the Welsh Terrier to the gentle nature of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, there's a suitable companion for various lifestyles. Whether serving as an energetic playmate or a devoted family member, terriers bring joy and companionship to countless homes across the nation.

At the Terrier Breeders' Association of Canada, we champion these remarkable breeds, celebrating their rich history and the vibrant roles they play in our lives. With a commitment to responsible breeding practices and education, we seek to promote the welfare and positive characteristics of terriers for generations to come.
